The Large Blue is one of the rarest butterflies in the UK and is also a globally endangered species. It was declared extinct in the UK in 1979 but has been successfully reintroduced at more than 11 sites as part of a major conservation programme by a cohort of 22 organisations, including Butterfly Conservation.
There is now a population of more than 10,000 Large Blue butterflies on reserves in Gloucestershire and Somerset, and the UK is now believed to be home to the largest concentration of the species anywhere in the world.
