Join the joint local societies outing to Barry Buddon. Access is often restricted, but for one day only there will be regulated access to the whole site. Barry Buddon is opposite Tentsmuir on the north side of the Tay estuary. It is designated for its complete sequence of sand dune succession. The sand dune system is one of the largest on the east coast of Scotland and forms a peninsula jutting out into the estuary. It is a complex site which provides a valuable example of an active dune system and a full range of dune habitats such as dune grasslands and heathland, which support a wide range of plants, mosses, liverworts, and invertebrates. It has one of the largest colonies of Small blue butterfly on the Angus coast as well as being an important site for Grayling. Other butterflies include Purple hairstreak and over 12 species have been recorded here. We also to intend to run moth traps on the previous night with a catch reveal at lunchtime. We will take the opportunity to carry out a Grayling survey as we should still be within the flight season.
Location: From Monifieth High street, turn onto Reform street at the sign to Barry Buddon camp and ranges. At the end of the street turn left into South street and at the sign take the alley under the railway line. Turn immediately left alongside the railway line and follow the track for about 200m to the Monifieth end of the football pitches car park, just before the entry gates to the site . At this point be prepared to car share. Bring a packed lunch and appropriate clothing.
Check details beforehand as there may still be Covid restrictions in place or a change in security status.
