Welcome to the Norfolk Branch of Butterfly Conservation
The County of Norfolk
Norfolk is a largely rural county with an area of 2,074 square miles, much is fairly flat and fertile land which has been drained for use as arable land. The Broads is a network of rivers and lakes on the county's east coast, extending south into Suffolk. Norfolk is often visited to see Swallowtail Butterfly.
History of the Branch
The Norfolk Branch was formed in 1982 and currently has over 900 members. As a voluntary organisation we care for butterflies and moths of Norfolk from gardens to nature reserves. We monitor butterfly populations and work with other wildlife organisations to maintain the habitats that butterflies and moths need. The Swallowtail butterfly is found only in Norfolk and so we have particular responsibility for making sure that it survives in its strongholds in the Norfolk Broads. We also attend many events in the county to inform the general public about what they can do in their gardens to help butterflies and moths thrive. In 1992 Butterfly Conservation purchased Catfield Fen which is managed to promote the special fauna and flora and it is a stronghold for the Swallowtail Butterfly. The Branch’s Activities
We have active members with all levels of interest and knowledge.
- We organise Summer Field Trips and moth trapping events to improve members' knowledge. More details on our events section.
- We arrange Indoor Meetings on butterfly and moth related topics. Our meetings are open to everyone. There is no charge for Butterfly Conservation members, non-members £2.00. Refreshments are available. More details on our events section.
- We attend other Conservation events to promote the Branch, engaging with the wide public.
- Most importantly, we run a comprehensive Butterfly Recording Scheme which has helped to build up a picture of butterfly distribution and status across the county.
- To keep Members informed we produce a twice-yearly newsletter. We also have a social media profile on Facebook and a twitter feed @BC_Norfolk.
