The Munching Caterpillars family has now moved north of the border and visits urban primary schools and attends local community events in the central belt of Scotland.
Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, this project engages primary school children (Primary 3 – 5 age group) with the wonder of butterflies and moths. Hands-on workshops include being up close and personal with some native live specimens as well as assisting schools to grow caterpillar food plants and butterfly and moth nectar plants in their school grounds.
Working with schools and pupils, the Munching Caterpillars Scotland Project Officer will visit each school 4 times, delivering a series of Curriculum for Excellence linked workshops over the course of the year, each workshop building on the last. Between visits it is encouraged that class teachers will be able to take the learning further, ready for the next workshop.
By increasing biodiversity in the school environment, we also hope to inspire the next generation of conservationists and help encourage more outdoor learning and sustainable development in the schools.
Lockdown learning
Normally, our Project Officer Polly Phillpot would be busy delivering workshops in schools across central Scotland. Sadly, due to the Corona Virus restrictions this is not currently possible. Polly is currently developing a series of resources that teachers, parents and carers can find online.
